Ilha Grande in Rio de Janerio State

Literally "Big Island", Ilha Grand is located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state and belongs to the municipality of Angra dos Reis. It is famous for its scenic beauty, which includes tropical beaches, lush vegetation and a rugged landscape. The highest point is Pico da Pedra D´Água, at 1031 metres.
Ilha Grande preserves some of the original Atlantic rainforest, one of the richest ecosystems in the world. It holds some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered animal species, such as the red-ruffed fruit crow, the brown howler monkey, the manned sloth the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the broad-snouted caiman.
The sea around the island is also protected and features a unique convergence of tropical, subtropical, and temperate-zone marine life. There are corals and tropical fish along with Southern right whales and Magellan penguins. Yes, there are penguins in Brazil!
Ilha Grande is a protected area, with most of its territory included in Ilha Grande State Park. There is small-scale ecotourism and the island has over 150 km of hiking trails connecting some coastal villages and hamlets where lodging is available to the many beaches, waterfalls, peaks and forests.
