Cidade Universitária is a district of the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Although it has some beaches they are not suitable for bathing. It is formed by the Ilha do Fundão, an artificial island created to host the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Here we have the Campi of the Engineering, Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Pharmacy, Dances, Physical Education, Arts, Industrial Design, and Geology departments of the UFRJ.

Cidade Universitária also has the boarding houses for the UFRJ students, along with a large research and development area sponsored by Petrobras and other companies.
