Favelas Pavão-Pavãozinho
Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho is a group of favelas that border Copacabana and Ipanema in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
Although these favelas are located in one of the richest areas of the city and have some of the most incredible views of the lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas and the sea, its dwellers have the same social problems as the other favelas.
The complex has several NGOs and government programs working with the community such as "Afro Reggae" and "Dançando para Não Dançar". It also has the support of several artists and sport stars, among those the Cirque du Soleil, the documentary director João Moreira Salles and the dancer Ana Botafogo. There is also a CIEP (Integrated Public Education Centre) Presidente João Goulart. Besides, the school has alternative classes of citizenship, computing science, circus, capoeira, dance and even boxing. This centre is run by professors along with member of the Gpae (Special Areas Policing Group).
In November 2007, president Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva visited the favela to inaugurate the Acceleration of Growth Program (PAC).
