About the City of Rio de Janeiro

Rio is Brazil’s most famous city and the home of the largest Carnival on Earth. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1565 and started as a sugar cane production centre. Then it grew to be the main port for exporting gold from Minas Gerais to Europe and to import slave trade from Africa. In 1763 Rio became the capital of the Vice-Royalty and subsequently capital of the Portuguese Empire in 1808. It was the capital of the Republic of Brazil from 1889 until 1960. Today Rio is Brazil’s main tourist destination and the Mecca of Portuguese Media, TV and Cinema.

Music and Carnival in Rio

Rio is a unique destination for music lovers: from the sensual sounds of samba and bossa-nova to the lively beats of favela’s funky and hip-hop.

Rio outdoors and beaches

Rio is also world famous for its beautiful open-minded and happy people, its perfect beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon), its magnificent views and, of course, football (no soccer here!).

A sport minded city, Rio has hosted major sports events such as the 2007 Pan-American Games and will host the finals of the Football World Cup Brazil 2014 and the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

Rio’s must sees are the Sugarloaf Hill (Pão de Açúcar), the Statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor), the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, a match in the Maracanã Stadium, the Tijuca Forest, the Paquetá Island,  Brazilian New Years’ Eve Celebration (”Reveillon”) in Copacabana and, last but by no means least, the Carnival at the Sambodromo. No wonder they call it the “Marvellous City”!

Each district in Rio has a charm of its own. Some are new and modern,

while other are traditional, exclusive or bohemian. You cannot skip Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema, Botafogo or Lapa!
Another distinctive trait of the city is the mixture of social classes. Favelas (the Portuguese word for slum) are next to rich neighbourhoods and it gives Rio much of its particular urban and cultural features. Though poor, favelas are proud, lively and striving communities.

Rio’s beautiful beaches have beautiful people on them! Women should remember to bring shorts a mini-skirt or a beach throw around the waist, a T-shirt or tank top, and flip-flops, but beware: What you wear at home might not be fashionable and if there is one thing in Rio you do not want to do is look funny. Men on the other hand only need a T-shirt if they go by bus (but when walking will not even need it!). As with bikinis for girls, boys use Speedos (”sunga” in Portuguese) as wide as a normal Calvin Klein. At the beach Cariocas usually practice frescobol, volleyball, body or surfboarding and, of course, beach football.
